CHAPTER NINE

Ryker

Fried chicken, roasted potatoes with sauteed asparagus cooked in herb butter. I was going to make sure that my parents ate well so they could build up their strength when the time came. Killian was coming. Not once did I waver on my conviction, and when he did, we weren’t gonna hold him back.

The color was returning to my mother’s cheeks, and she was coughing less than before.

I had passed the meals three times a day, whereas Knut’s men only fed them table scraps once daily. Damn bastards. Wasn’t the silver enough to weaken them? They had to top it off by starving them.

I entered the foyer and nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw Robin standing under the stairs as if he was waiting for me.

“What are you doing?”

“Feeding my parents, someone has to,” I said, walking away. “So, will you tell Knut?”

“You don’t have to worry about me doing that. The others do what they can to care for their parents as well. It’s not much of a secret.”

“Good.”

“Amado thinks you’re stuck up. You haven’t been by to speak to us at all since our first meeting.”

“I don’t mean to be that way; I’m just trying to keep a low profile, hoping that Knut won’t notice me.”

Robin laughed. “That’s pointless. You’re a new special prize, of course, he notices you. He’s never gonna stop noticing you.”

A group of servants walked by the living room and suddenly became so silent we could hear a pin drop. Robin gripped my arm lightly and guided me out of there.

“Knut can’t have children,” he whispered. “He’s been having so much sex with us that it’s impossible for him not to get one of us pregnant. He’s already offered me to his most trusted general James in the hopes that he would get me pregnant and pass the child off as his. In the meantime, Knut is probably using your pregnancy to squash any rumors about him. What is an alpha who can’t even father children?”

“He really trusts James.”

“They were best friends and grew up together, so it seems he’s going to be on his side no matter what; however, the other generals are not like that.”

This was it; the information I needed was handed to me as if the spirits had heard my prayers.

The note the Panther slipped into my pocket informed me that he was working for Killian and needed to know who Knut’s generals were for their assault to work. I only managed to find out about James. I took a chance and asked him if he could point out the other generals. He smiled at me though I still couldn’t read his face to tell if he would ask me why. I had already been betrayed too many times, and it made me apprehensive about trusting someone again.

“Walk with me and pretend we’re gossiping about stupid shit,” Robin replied. He didn’t release me. We walked around the grounds of the estate, both inside and out. On this seemingly innocent walk, he had pointed out the men I needed to know about.
